Japon, masque Iki ningyo, Période Meiji 19e siècle
Composé de papier mâché, de gofun avec des yeux en verre, ce bel exemplaire de masque Iki-ningyo (poupée vivante) affirme sa personnalité par son expression intense et réaliste.
Popularisé à partir de 1852 suite à une exposition à Osaka. Les masques présentés représentaient des personnages grandeur nature, aux expressions parfois dramatiques mais toujours réalistes. Très vite, ces masques furent reproduits pour l’exportation comme souvenirs de la culture japonaise, Ils remportèrent un vif succès.

Made of papier-mâché and gofun with glass eyes, this beautiful example of an Iki-ningyo mask (living doll) conveys a strong sense of personality through its intense and realistic expression.
Popularized starting in 1852 following an exhibition in Osaka. The masks on display depicted life-size figures, with expressions that were sometimes dramatic but always realistic. Very quickly, these masks were reproduced for export as souvenirs of Japanese culture, and they were a huge success.
It is sold with its Plexiglas base.
