Nils Thorsson earthenware dish for Aluminia / Royal Copenhagen – Denmark, 1960s
A very fine decorative glazed earthenware dish, designed by Nils Thorsson for Aluminia / Royal Copenhagen, Denmark, in the 1960s. This piece elegantly illustrates the post-war revival of Scandinavian ceramic design, of which Nils Thorsson was one of the leading figures.
The dish is distinguished by its modernist decoration, combining stylised motifs, organic or geometric shapes and colourful glazes characteristic of Danish production from this period. Depending on the specific model, it may be linked to the Baca or Tenera series, two iconic collections developed by Aluminia / Royal Copenhagen in the 1960s.
Nils Thorsson and Aluminia
A Swedish-born ceramist, painter and designer who became a leading figure in Danish design, Nils Thorsson served as artistic director of the Aluminia earthenware factory from 1933 to 1969. From 1949 onwards, he also took charge of the stoneware department at Royal Copenhagen. His work helped to establish Aluminia / Royal Copenhagen as a key player in 20th-century Scandinavian ceramics.
He was responsible for creating or overseeing several important ranges: Solbjerg, Marselis, Tenera, Baca and Diana. The Baca and Tenera ranges, which are particularly sought-after today, helped to popularise a modern aesthetic combining graphic details, stylised naturalistic motifs and abstract patterns.
