A pair of forest landscapes, two oil paintings on wooden panels, late 19th century. French school – monogrammed in red on the right.

A pair of woodland landscapes painted in oil on wooden panels, presented in their frames. The first panel depicts a lively woodland scene featuring several deer, concealed amongst the vegetation. The second depicts a forest scene featuring several men in late 19th-century military uniforms.

Their sombre and nuanced palette, dominated by deep greens, browns and earth tones, together with their intimate atmosphere, evoke the aesthetic of the Barbizon School. The density of the undergrowth, the effects of depth and the interplay of light and shadow filtered through the foliage convey a realistic vision of nature, well-suited to hunting scenes and forest walks.

The frames have been restored.
