Hirado porcelain figurine, glazed in underglaze blue and brown tones. This monkey, dressed in the traditional costume of a Sambasô dancer, wears a top hat and holds a fan and bells, emblematic accessories of this ritual dance intended to appease the gods.
Perforations on the back suggest it could have been worn as a netsuke. Its removable head reveals a playful mechanism allowing the monkey to stick out its tongue.
